Ohh that’s noice
Women perform better when menstruating
Soo, you’re seeing it right: despite feeling worse during menstruation, women perform better on a battery of cognitive tests. Considering athletic performance, the results are inconclusive as a result of a small review.
The first WOODEN satellite!
Nah, it’s not AI-generated. It’s called Lignosat, and it’s a wooden satellite made of magnolia. It’s a child of Kyoto University and the Sumitomo Forestry collaboration, planned for launch in September on a SpaceX rocket 🥰
Science
Personalized cancer vaccine
Pfizer will hold a trial for personalized mRNA cancer vaccines, though it’ll end in ~2027. Still, it’s a hope! It seems to really activate a T cell response in early-phase trials - although we know how it goes with big pharma.
AI-based target prediction, similarity search, molecule screening
Just a nifty-nifty website to test the latest trends in AI biotech/bioinformatics.
Antigen (peanut) presentation in childhood prevents allergy (surprise)
Another proof that the mighty Bamba is up to something: looks like this is generalizable to an extent, too. And Claude 3.5 had tried its paws at visualizing everything! Not that bad, actually.
McDonald’s is hiking…prices *cry*
Another viz take by Claude: this time, it’s on Mac’s price increases of 2019-2024 😢 It’s for US only, but still an alarming trend…
Technology readiness levels
Can prove useful for VC scoring or market research - or if you’re doing some surveys!
BZD use disorder + tapering
From Natural Products Altering GABAergic Transmission | IntechOpen
A nice take by Neuropharmacology Institute.
About 1.5% of users develop a BZD use disorder - smaller than expected. About 80% take as Rx’d
They’ve also overviewed some tapering techniques: cut and hold (% reduction/period), Ashton protocol (C&H with Diazepam cross-taper), microtaper (small % reductions every 1-3 days). The latter requires a compound pharmacy, volumetric dosing or microscales
And another microtake tackles appropriate use cases and first+ lines of treatment with BZD
Remember, not all the subunits cause tolerance and amnesia. A nice take is in David Nutt’s slides which I’ll repost shortly anyway - it’s awesome.
Noiseee, noisy maps one and two (a compilation)
If you have noise as much as I do (or if you’ve got ADHD, ASD, anxiety - you name it) - a nice resource to visit is a noise map. Especially so if you’re planning on digital nomading, or relocate!
MAO-A and the BPD: seems like we got a link!
Elevated Monoamine Oxidase-A (MAO-A) levels in the prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortex turned out to be significantly associated with the severity of mood symptoms, suicidality, and cognitive impairment in BPD.
LoRA -> MoRA, or low-rank to square matrices
Again, fine-tuning - using a single square matrix with a decompression algorithm is a bit more efficient:
Here, FFT is not “Fast Fourier Transform” but “Fully Fine-Tuned model”, ahem.
Another day (month, actually), another drop of progress… And here I am posting once a month ’cause I can <3
Touch processing in ASD
Persons with ASD report lower physical sensations, but a broader spectrum of pleasant/unpleasant sensations from physical touch. TLDR: touch all you want, and touch those you like/love 💗
